1. Introduction
Engine bearings (also known as plain shaft or sleeve bearings) are assembled with crankshaft, connecting rod, and camshaft, and the role is to convert reciprocating motion of the piston, and rotate crankshaft, which is connected by suitable gearing to the drive wheel of the vehicles. Engine bearings are used in various types of machinery, under widely different conditions. Though the properties required of bearings cover a very broad range, bearing material is the most important factor of bearing quality, unless bearing size exceeds tolerance limit. A bearing material that is well suited for one application may be entirely useless in another. A good bearing material cannot be defined in general way but must be determined according to the type of application.
Characteristic of all sleeve (plain) bearings is the sliding movement of the shaft (or thrust collar) surface with respect to the bearing surface, in contrast with bearings that have rolling contract. In order to reduce the friction that results from this sliding movement, the bearings are lubricated with oil or grease.
With ideal conditions of lubrication, a continuous oil film should be maintained between the sliding surface; consequently, the material of the bearing surface would be quite unimportant. However, under actual conditions of bearing operation, some direct contact between shaft and bearing surface is unavoidable.
As a result, the "bearing qualities of the material" forming the bearing surface are actually of paramount importance. Also, the various bearing materials show considerable difference in their ability to maintain a continuous oil film at the working surface.
